A Narrator starts this film with these words – Five years after the end of the Civil War, a thousand-mile cattle trail stretched from the plains of Texas to the railroad depots in Kansas. For ninety grueling days through dust, heat, flies, loneliness, cowboys pushed Texas cattle northward on the Abilene Trail at an average speed of three quarters of a mile an hour toward Abilene Kansas where raw-bred Southern beef could be turned into hard, Eastern cash. Abilene was the end of the trail, the end of the trailhands’ thousand-mile, ninety-day-long boredom. This is a pretty good western for its time and budget! Randolph Scott delivers a solid performance while Edgar Buchanan’s county sheriff provides more than just comedy relief, coming perilously close to being on the wrong side! Ann Dvorak’s dance hall entertainer shows spunk and great time style big musical numbers are obviously there to build up her star billing. Between the comedy, the music, the romance a pretty good western drama happens also!

Great movie! Very good plot and Randolph Scott kept us guessin’ about which woman would win him. I loved your commentary about Randolph Scott. Can’t picture him and Cary Grant as friends. Wow! Even better is to know about his friendship to Billy Graham. Thanks so much for this website. I love it and appreciate you for creating it for us!

This is one of the very few Randolph Scott westerns I have never seen, and of course, it was a great movie.
And not to steal the show from Mr. Scott , but how ’bout that Ann Dvorak ? Wow, what a beauty.
I remember her in a John Wayne film called ” Flame of The Barbary Coast”. As soon as I heard her sing a line I knew it was the same voice.
I’m hooked on western films with a pointed hook
Thank you W.O.T.W. for this addition to your library of great films.
